Introducing The Pair
A real website, built by hand, and the Coop that runs it. You change the price once, from your phone, and the site updates itself. Both yours outright.
Most people rent their website from whoever built it. You just never get told that part.
I am going to mark up this page the same way I will mark up yours. Keep an eye out.
I used to pay hundreds of dollars a year for a website I did not own. That is the part that stung. Not the money, the fact that when my host switched it off, I had to ask permission to get my own files back.
It took weeks. When I finally had them, I rebuilt the whole thing, and this time I am building it the way I now build for everyone else: the site, and a Coop behind it, so there is one place to change things and the website follows.
I am my own first client. You can read the review I wrote of my own site further down, including the parts that are not finished yet.
Fifteen years of building websites, and it still happened to me. That is how I know it is not a you problem.
You submit a ticket. You wait. You follow up. You wait again. Somewhere in there you quietly stop bothering, and your website slowly stops being true about your own business. I have sat with that loop from the inside with dozens of owners, and the maddening part is that none of them were doing anything wrong.
Roost exists to end that one loop. The whole business is other people's businesses: your brand, your site, the hub behind it, and a person on the other end who answers. Have an idea next spring that needs a name, a look and a site by June? That is the work. I am with you for that part too, not just the handoff.
the front door
Built by hand around your business, not dropped into a template. The part the world sees and judges you by.
the back door
A small private hub, made for you, that feeds the website. No dashboard to learn and no plugin to update.
the whole idea, in one box
This is a toy, not your site. But the mechanism is the real one: you edit in the Coop, and every surface that quotes it updates on its own. Type anything.

One edit, two places, and no second login. That is the part that is hard to picture until you have done it once.
Ditch the old way of doing websites and get a Coop. Here is the whole route, start to finish, in about a week. Tap any stop.
first, the only question that changes anything
There is no wrong answer here, and the price is the same either way.
free, and no pitch attached
You send the address. I send back what I find: the alt text and meta descriptions your theme filled in for you, what is slow, what breaks on a phone, what Google is actually reading. The notes are yours to keep whether or not we go further.
one conversation, usually over coffee
Usually it is the handful of things that go stale and embarrass you. Hours, prices, a menu, a seasonal banner, the thing you keep meaning to update and never do. You already know what they are.
about a week
Same layout, same look, same photos. Nobody visiting will notice a thing, which is the point. What changes is underneath: every fix from your audit gets built in, so the alt text is real, the descriptions are yours, it loads faster, and it behaves properly on whatever someone is holding.
Then the Coop goes in behind it, and for the first time the site is something you can change.
about a week
Built by hand around your business, not dropped into a template. Every fix from your audit is built in from the start, and we can go as far as a full rebrand if that is what you have been circling.
The Coop is built at the same time, to fit it. That is why the two can never disagree with each other.
about twenty minutes
We sit down together and you change something real while I watch, and you see it land on the live site. Then the domain, the files and the logins all go into your name. Not mine.
from then on
Price change on a Tuesday night, from the couch, on your phone. That is the whole point of the thing.
That is where The Pair ends. One fee, paid once, and both halves are yours. If you want me around afterwards, Care is below, and it is genuinely optional.
Your theme shipped with alt text and meta descriptions already filled in. Demo values, written for somebody else's site, sitting in fields that look finished. Nothing in the flow ever tells you to check them, so almost nobody does. Google reads them anyway.
I am not here to tell you Squarespace is bad. You can fix all of it in there. The problem is not the platform, it is that the defaults look like decisions.
Fastest way to check your own: open your site, right click, View Page Source, and search for "description". If it reads like a brochure for a different company, now you know.
Nobody to email, no ticket, no waiting a week for a one line change.
The Coop is built around the words you already use for your own business.
Change it once. The website follows, and so do the screens in the room if you have them.
Real alt text, real descriptions, link previews that work when someone texts your site to a friend.
I can rebuild the look completely, or rebuild it to look exactly like it does today. Your call, same price.
Domain in your name, files in your hands, no subscription holding it hostage.
The Pair comes with five Feathers, and the website is what most people spend them on first. These are what the others tend to become. Pick the five that match how you actually spend your week.
Captions and posts drafted in your voice, scheduled from the same place you change your hours.
Logos, photos, menus and PDFs in one place, so nobody texts you asking for the high res version again.
Write once, send to your list, and have it match the site it came from.
Build the creative and the copy next to the thing you are advertising.
New customer forms that land somewhere useful instead of your inbox.
Every Coop I build has at least one Feather that exists nowhere else, because every business has one job that is only theirs.
We work this part out together. You already know what eats your week.
Vie is mine. I went through it the same way I will go through yours, and I did not go easy on it. Fourteen findings, written the same way every time: what I found, why it matters, how I would fix it, and what we would measure afterwards. You can read every page.
the whole review
getvie.com, read closely
Every finding, with the method recorded. Four are measured and reproduced
on the build. The other ten are marked as samples of the format, on every page they appear
on, because an illustration is not a claim.
Read it
the same notes, pinned to the page
My site, marked up
The site exactly as it stands, with each finding pinned to the thing it
is about. This is what you get back: not a list of complaints, your own page with my
notes in the margin.
Open it
Honest about where Vie is: the review is finished, and the site is live. The Coop behind it is still a build, and the review says so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. I would rather show you a real one in progress than a tidy one that is not.

What you get
What it ends
Bought separately that is a $1,500 Coop plus a site build. Delivery is usually about a week.
Care
optional, and only if you want me around after
Plenty of people take the keys and never need me again, which is the whole idea. Care is for the ones who would rather not think about it. Two ways to keep me close, and neither is required or bundled. Nothing stops working if you cancel, and you still own everything.
Keep it running
$199 /moThe quiet upkeep, so it just keeps working.
Done for you
$500 /moYou never touch it. I make the changes and keep it fresh.
Cancel either one anytime. You still own everything.
Yes, really one time. I am not going to charge you rent on your own front door.
Roost Studio is me, in Crozet, Virginia. I have spent about twenty years doing brand and marketing for small businesses and nonprofits, and fifteen of those building websites. Six kids, one studio, a lot of coffee.
I build every Coop by hand. When you send that form, it comes to me, and when you write back in eight months because something changed, that is still me.
Free, and there is no pitch on the other end. I will show you the alt text and descriptions your theme filled in, what is slow, and what a phone actually does with it. If you want to fix it yourself afterwards, fix it yourself. The notes are yours.
Usually back within a day or two. I read these myself.
